As a six-time winner in the 1970s, would it be fair to call you the Godfather of the Gunston 500?
(Laughs) Maybe.
Any gripes about the name change to the Mr Price Pro?
Not at all. The main thing is that it’s still going and is the longest running pro surf event in the world. My father was one of the guys who started it in 1969.
What’s the big difference between surfing during your time and now?
I think the only difference is the m-word, money. You still have to have talent and drive .
How often do you catch a wave these days?
I still get out often. I went to J-Bay last week. I still love it, I’m still obsessed. The body takes a lot of punishment now, but I can still handle it.
What can you tell us about your documentary, Bustin’ Down the Door?
I think it’s a great story about a crossroads in surfing. It’s about a group of youngsters who revolutionised their world. It tells you about a whole new radical style of surfing and the price you have to pay to realise your dreams. Nu-Metro are releasing it in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban on July 4.
