Australian Mick Fanning's hopes of retaining his world surfing title have taken another hammer blow with ratings leader Kelly Slater winning the ASP event in Fiji this morning. Fanning has slipped to seventh place in the world rankings after he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Slater went on to record yet another victory, beating fellow American CJ Hobgood in two-metre surf at Cloudbreak. It was Slater's third win in four events this season and he now leads his nearest rival by almost 1,000 points in the standings.
